On the whole, about 8.48% of respondents have used ChatGPT for general research, leaving 91.52% who have not. When analyzed by faculty title, the use varies, with Assistant Professors, Lecturers/Instructors, showing a slightly higher usage, all around 11%. However, none of the Deans/Chairs/Distinguished Professors reported using ChatGPT for general research.

By enrollment, institutions with between 9,000 and 22,000 students have the highest usage at 11.11%. For Carnegie Class, specialized colleges lead with 16.00% usage, while Research Universities have the lowest at 7.53%.

This study looks closely at how college and university faculty in the USA are using ChatGPT in scholarly applications.  The study presents detailed data sets for the percentage of faculty with a free ChatGPT account, a paid account, as well as data on its use for article summaries, general research, data analysis or cleanup, grant proposals, editing or proofreading and a plethora of other tasks related to scholarship and scholarly publishing.  The study also presents data on the self-perceived  impact of ChatGPT on personal scholarly productivity.
