Surveillance Planet: Pervasive Video Observation Inviting More Regulation

This IDC Market Note evaluates the video surveillance market. There are over one billion video surveillance cameras currently operating in the business and public spaces. This does not count the number of cameras that consumers have adopted. Virtually every place on the planet is now potentially observable. This pervasive application of a technology that has the potential to intrude in peoples' lives is causing increasing concerns for regulators and public policy officials. It is unlikely that the number of surveillance cameras will decline, however, now is the time for industry to work with policy makers to control the use of this technology to ensure that the value of surveillance is maintained, but the potential for abuse is reduced.
