Sainsbury’s is the second largest supermarket chain in the UK, with over 800 convenience stores and 600+ supermarkets. Most of its customers are females, accounting for 56.9%, while male customers account for 43.1% of its shopper base. Sainsbury’s has invested in its value position with its Aldi price match proposition with over 150 fresh products that helps to ensure it appeals to customers across all income groups with 32.1% of its shopper base earning between £14.9k-24.9k, and more than half (52.6%) in the middle-income group (£25k-£49.9k), and only 9.5% from a more affluent income group (£75k and above).
Sainsbury’s recorded a profit before tax of £854 million, up from a £164 million loss in the previous year, led by a 3.4% annual growth in retail sales. According to its annual report, the retailer registered an underlying profit before tax of £730 million in 2021-22, representing a substantial annual growth of 104% over 2019/20.
