International Survey of Research University Faculty, Integrating Digital Content into Online Classes

This survey examines how research university faculty integrated digital content into online classes during terms affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The report focuses on the degree of digital content faculty integrated, the balance of delivery methods, and what types of sources, including library sources, this content comprised. The survey also asks about content platform use and preference, the ease of content integration, and library support for content integration. The survey additionally asks broader questions about the integration of course management systems with institutional communications tools. One hundred twenty-seven instructors from fifty-three research universities participated, representing all faculty roles and broad discipline categories. The majority of participant institutions are U.S., but just over a quarter comprise institutions from the UK/Ireland, Canada, and Australia.

Just a few of this 70-page report’s many findings are that:

About half of the sample found integrating content “easy” (18.9%) or “very easy” (30.71%).

In general, faculty were seeking more interactive content and more textbook availability online.

More than 17% of survey participants had not integrated library content into their courses but said that they would like to.

18.87% of full professors felt that they needed “a great deal” or “a lot” of help in integrating online content into their courses.
