Europe Gas and LNG Market Overview, Production Breakdown, Usage by Industry and Upcoming Projects, 2023
Summary
This report provides an analysis behind the decreasing gas production in the European continent, while showing how its reliance on Russian imports had been replaced by the LNG trade from countries such as the United States, Qatar, Algeria, Egypt and Angola.
The declining Norwegian gas production, alongside with the Russia-Ukraine conflict is causing the European continent to rely heavily on LNG imports, mainly from the United States and Qatar. As a consequence, Europe strategy will be to increase the regasification capacity to 14,895 billion cubic feet (bcf) by 2030. Additionally, the gas demand in the continent will remain relatively steady at 44.4 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) by 2028, although its use for power generation will start being replaced by solar and wind energy systems.
Key Highlights
The decreasing European gas production will be due to countries like Norway, which currently holds a production 60%, whose most important fields like Skarv, Ormen Lange, and Marting Linge are in declining.
In 2023, the gas demand exceeded the supply, which was of 19.9 bcfd, by 26 bcfd.
The demand itself will slightly decrease by 2028, due to the natural gas being replaced by Solar and Wind energy for power generation.
The continent LNG liquefaction capacity has remaing steady at 5.62 mtpa since 2016. Due to absence of new projects it will remain at the same levels until the end of the decade.
European LNG regasification capacity is growing rapidly to fulfill its demand. The main economies exporting gas to Europe, as of 2023, are the United States, Qatar, Russia, Algeria, Egypt, and Angola.
