President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted in a military-led coup d'état on July 26 and is being held in custody. The military junta, called the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), installed Brigade General Abdourahamane Tchiani as the country's president and the former minister of finance, Ali Lamine Zeine, as prime minister. The situation remains fluid, and the junta has entered negotiations to transition back to democracy; however, there is a strong likelihood the junta will renege on any agreement and is biding its time to consolidate power.
